After having completed reading both the Lord of the Flies and the Secret History earlier this semester, I began to see vague similarities between the two. To begin, the group of friends in the Secret History can be related to the boys on the island in the Lord of the Flies. This is due to their social isolation from everything and everyone else. Both groups seem to have their own mindset that they develop throughout both books, and they also have very similar symbols. A good example of a common symbol in this case would be sophistication.
At the beginning of both books, both groups seem to be focused on order mainly. Then, we start to see a change at certain points in the books. In the Lord of the Flies, we see that civilization truly begins to leave them when they kill Simon in the ritual, and around this time, Piggy's specs crack. This is the exact same with the Secret History, where the group's grip on sophistication truly loosens when they perform the ritual and unintentionally kill the farmer. Also, both have this idea of civilization bound to a physical thing. In LotF, civilization is bound to the conch, and the conch is broken when Ralph realizes that there is no law anymore. In the Secret History, civilization is bound to the group's mentor, Julian. When the group kills Bunny and Julian finds Bunny's note about the ritual, he leaves, and with it, he takes the group's sophistication.
